<description>soooo as someone who studies linguistics, it always kinda shocks me that politicians don't give a flip what LINGUISTS say about the whole bilingual ed stuff. it just reinforces my intuition that it's mostly xenophobic political crap, because otherwise they'd want to know what the experts have to say about it.

<description>so i just picked up "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria" and i have to say... I miss talking about this stuff. For a split second (and only that long) I feel like I want to go back to school.

<description>Man, that's some conversation. I must say, I really buttons my shirt when white people talk about issues dealing with race and white privelege. I love it, and encourage you to maintain discourse whenever possible and engage everyone you can in dialogue. You never know who's eyes you might open, or shirt you might button. LOL. I'm full of crazy metaphors.

		<description>dude,
I really agree with your point at the end. I have 2 comments:
1) I am an immigrant, and I along with my family did have to learn english as a 2nd language; and now I have to learn a 3rd (spanish because none of my patients learn english - of course, I have tons of free time to pick up a new language while becoming a doctor, and of course my broken and hardly passable spanish will be adequate for doing a detail check up and exam - I probably won't miss a thing :) I beleive in learning English. If you left your old country behind to come live here and live the dreams of this nation, then you need to learn its language in order to thrive. It is possible, since every single member of my family in the US (30+ people) learned english as immigrants, with no bilingual or specially designed classes, etc. I feel like there's no push for most Spanish-speaking immigrants to learn english. That's just personal expereience. Of my last 800 Mexican American patients only 2 have been able to tell me what's ailing them in English. I don't understand how this can be.

2) Be careful about becoming a journalist. I don't think you'll be allowed to publish major stuff that goes against the status quo (at least that's what I get from reading Chomski). If you really want to make a differece, either go into politics or become rediculously wealthy and get whatever you feel like printed or aired.

ok that was my two bits, sorry I went off on the English thing, it has become personal over the last 2 years.
peace,
roozbeh
